Fun fact about the history of birthstones: In 1870, Tiffany & Co. published a collection of poems written to decree each month’s birthstone. The poem for January, whose birthstone is the garnet, reads as follows:

By her who in this month is born
No gem save garnets should be worn;
They will ensure her constancy,
True friendship, and fidelity.
